I get asked this a lot so easier to put here.
Does anyone have a list of natural pigment sellers that they regularly buy from? Eg from Etsy - some people mentioned that they buy pigments from Etsy. It would be good to share if possible!
For the UK (but they may ship internationally) and later if you want to browse in store as colours are best seen in real life:
AP Fitzpatrick: they have exclusive relationships with some colour suppliers (and I'm happy that they also stock my brushes!) and knowledgeable staff, practising artists https://shop.apfitzpatrick.co.uk
Cornellissen: a Harry Potter of a shop, a real rabbit hole to get lost in dreaming in... they stock some colours and gums and weird and wonderful resins (ok this is for oil painting and other things but oil painting can also be used for miniature style) used in medieval times and earlier (dragon's blood! smalt!) and knowledgeable staff, practising artists https://www.cornelissen.com
Some friends, and friends of friends, and gifts... although since there are issues with shipping/leaving the country they are not always easy to obtain.
If there are equivalent shops in your own country, please add to this list!
Pigment Tokyo is my favorite. Locally here in California I get my pigments from George at https://www.naturalpigments.com/ - he has the best transparency about where his pigments are sourced and what their attributes are, including the science and chemistry. Sinopia is in San Francisco ships everywhere and Kremer pigments in NY.
My personal selection of pigments is very small and I really only order from George - for me it’s like cooking with spices. I can’t manage too many or I get overwhelmed.
In France, I know of Le Sennelier : http://www.sennelier-colors.com/ And there is also Okhra, where they sell great ochres from Roussillon: http://okhraer.com/ In Italy, there's Zecchi: http://zecchi.it/?lang=eng I haven't tried this one yet, but it was recommended by a friend :)
My friend Esra Alhamal is selling limited edition handmade paints; she makes them in small quantities - sign up to her newsletter in order to be notified of their release: https://www.instagram.com/islamicillumination/?hl=en
She is also generally an illumination powerhouse so have a look at her offerings online including a blog, courses and tutorials, a podcast (she also interviewed me, it was so much fun chatting to her!) and much much more...
Oh great! Thanks for adding! Malachite is one of my top favourite pigments to use and paint with ever - so versatile because you find it in all aspects of a miniature painting (eg can be used as mix colour, for clothes, for landscapes, for illumination). Such a beautiful minty green! I have some a friend got me from Russia.
I got some malchite from this shop and was very happy with the results.
