Hello everyone,
During the amazing map class with Vaishali, we enjoyed many interesting and curious details. And I would like to share some of the detailed pictures of the map in here.
This is the display of the Piri Re’is’ map in Topkapi Palace Museum, Istanbul. (Room: Library of Ahmed III) (The note indicates that ‘This is a replica of the original map that is under conservation’)
And the following pictures are from a book called: ‘In memory of the 400th anniversary of Katip Celebi’
P.S. Vaishali, I think I misread this king’s name. I believe it is Padishah-i Gine(Guinie)
and these are from a website
Thank you so much Merve! It's great to see the details close up, for instance the elephant's trunk was damaged and that's why it looks short - it wasn't originally short, it has just been eroded or something, so on ours we can do the full size trunk... I only realised that from seeing your beautiful photos! As it did look odd and I know that they knew about elephants and could be accurate about them... the other one is the whale, whose face is now more detailed and rumpled at the front, which looks more reminiscent of medieval European maps and sea monsters and less like a giant fish. Interesting! There is so much in one map isn't there...
