Weaving Materials List
From top to bottom: different warp yarns, two different hand looms (these are the simplest - simple is best) in ideal sizes for the eventual tiny weaves related to books we will be doing, and the bobbin
Above: canvas frame, highly recommended, you can get these in different sizes and it gives you a lot of freedom to make different sized tapestries (for large tapestries you can use other things, I've used all kinds of things, from backs of chairs to large canvas frames specially adapted clothing rails)
You will need:
Tools and equipment
Hand loom. This can be a simple canvas frame, as in the photo, or indeed the back of a chair - once you’ve got the basic principles of weaving then you can purchase a professionally made hand loom. I recommend the simpler the better actually. To begin with I recommend just a simple canvas frame as then stuff won’t get in the way and you have more freedom as well
A bobbin/baton to beat down
A fork (yes!) or equivalent to tamp down (you don’t really need spools, shuttles and shed sticks unless you’re going to do a big tapestry)
Of course you need scissors and other things you’d find in a basic sewing kit, and rulers/pencils - things you’d find in a basic drawing kit but you’ll likely have all these things in your home already
Materials
Warp: Cotton or linen warp wool twine for tapestry hand weaving, go with medium weights for everything to begin with
Weft: Wool for hand weaving, later silk; please note that wool for knitting is different especially if you’re going to wear it (it’s softer) and wool for hand weaving tapestry is tougher/coarser/feels different. You can still use other types of wool, you might just go through them faster and they will give a different feel. Ideally you need a treasure box/grab bag of supplies, a bit like paints but in wools and yarns and silks and threads and things you can use for the weave.
And that’s it! The most important is the tapestry bobbin to buy; everything else is ‘normal’ studio equipment. K-I-S-S!
All different kinds of 'paints' and lovely things you'll collect over the years!
