Hello all! I have pestered Vaishali quite a lot in the past about the ins and outs of making and selling fine art prints. If any of you find it helpful, I found this online course by an American artist all about the nitty gritty of preparing, creating and packaging fine art prints: https://www.laurieanneart.com/pages/art-to-print#erid4618067 It's not cheap, but it looks quite comprehensive. She also claims that the information is relevant whether or not you're based in the US.
I plan on taking it, and hopefully I'll become a resource rather than a bottomless pit of questions on the topic! Just including the link in case it's of interest to anybody else.
And if any of you are art print savvy and have resources or tips to share, I'm all ears! Thanks.
I did ask around about prints. I know not everyone can make the Carpet Pages events (the final one is on 25 Nov); at the very 1st one a couple of artists did discuss prints from the point of view of someone seasoned at that game and someone just starting out. It was fascinating. Scanning vs photographing art - one artist said that photographing art gave her a better outcome than the scanned one. Yet I've also heard of scans giving high quality outcomes too (all for the fine work you're doing with miniature and/or highly detailed technique).
Another thing I see a lot of: once you make your print, you can paint shell gold or gild gold leaf on top of it. Actually, fine books from the past used this technique too, I've got some somewhere. The gold was overlaid on top (not real gold). So the prices of these prints are accordingly higher.
Something else from my experience of getting artwork photographed (for portfolios or publications or print in that sense, not to sell) - for me the blues are a particular source of frustration or shall we say challenge... so to find a photographer who understands this and gets the blues right. This may not be everyone's experience but it is mine. I always like to check if the blues are true to life and then the whole image is accurate; accurate colour is something really important to me. Use a good photographer.
So yes I'm still on the hunt for more info for you! Please bear in mind that actually I have never done a print and don't plan to anytime soon! I may just do one of the Dome painting in future and that'll be it.
Looks like a great course and I wish you the best of luck with it! Like I said I would like to buy one of your prints ;-)
