Rachel's Flowers
Part of the Cabinet of Curiosities oil miniature series
Starts on Wed Feb 1, 2023 | £399
Rachel Ruysch and the Dutch Golden Age
Inspired by Dutch flower paintings and the work of Rachel Ruysch, paint a flower composition on copper. During this class, students will focus on a small piece, aiming to create a carefully considered and beautiful image while coming to understand their materials. Rachel Ruysch painted until her 80s, was a successful artist and had 10 children - over 300 years ago!
Read Jessie Burton’s The Miniaturist to soak up the atmosphere. Although painting oil on a copper panel is less familiar to us than wood or canvas, the use of metal is an ancient practice and was done throughout the Renaissance. The German monk Theophilus wrote in the 12th century about painting on tin leaf and Cennini described painting on gold. Because of the rigid and non-absorbent nature of copper, these paintings long lasting with brilliantly preserved jewel-like colours. Vasari praised silver, copper, tin and other metals as well as stone and marble since oils do not ‘sink in’ to its surface (as they do on canvas and, to a lesser extent, wood) with the added benefit of being impervious to worms!
UPCOMING Coming up are mushrooms, animals, little houses, peas in a pod, cave paintings, teapots, deserts, stars, stairs, galaxies and nebulas, hot springs, the moon, the sun, islands, mome raths, extinct Pre-Cambrian and Mesozoic landscapes, birds, doors, forest floors, enchanted seas, a materials library subsection including wood, glass, rocks, bread…

Himalyan Monal Bird
Part of the Cabinet of Curiosities oil miniature series
Starts on Wed Feb 1, 2023 | £399
A Hybrid Oils/Miniatures class
What a bird. Less famous than the peacock but - what a bird. Super stunning and should be better known. A lot of fantasy birds I've seen ultimately seem to derive from the fantastic pheasant family. Paint a Himalayan Monal bird in oils on copper and capture its stunning colours, and paint your own fantasy flying monal style bird in miniatures. I have chosen every singular object or picture carefully as each will help transmit a certain aspect of the principles of oil painting and picture making. These images are starting points only; we will entirely create our own artworks.

Dice
Part of the Cabinet of Curiosities oil miniature series
Started on Wed Feb 2, 2022 | £399
We’ll start this series with the dice. Take a chance on oils on copper and who knows where it will lead… The game of dice has made and ruined fortunes and lost whole kingdoms in the great Indian epic Mahabharata; it is also an innocuous children’s toy used in board games or as an ancient game of chance and luck in itself. You can start off organising your cabinet by looking at the world chronologically and historically starting with the creation of the universe or you can build up your world picture hierarchically as they did in Medieval times starting with God, angels and humans. Or you can look at it slightly askew and from the oblique point of view of magic, chance and fate, knowing that the world is being created anew at every minute, and multiple forked paths are available at any one time. This is the game of choices and chances, fate and free will. It is the game of life itself.
Games of chance and dice were also originally a form of divination and meditation aid as well as play toys. This magical way of looking at the world allows for multiple associations and readings across categories; games allow for endless variations and indeed information, even secret codes, can be embedded ‘in between the lines’.
I have chosen every singular object or picture carefully as each will help transmit a certain aspect of the principles of oil painting and picture making. These images are starting points only; we will entirely create our own artworks.
NEXT The Ivory Tower AFTER THAT Glass beads
UPCOMING Coming up are bubbles, origami, mushrooms, bonsai, animals, little houses, peas in a pod, cave paintings, teapots, deserts, stars, stairs, galaxies and nebulas, hot springs, the moon, the sun, islands, mome raths, extinct Pre-Cambrian and Mesozoic landscapes, birds, doors, forest floors, enchanted seas, a materials library subsection including wood, glass, rocks, bubbles, bread…

Paper Origami Crane
Part of the Cabinet of Curiosities oil miniature series
Started on Wed Jun 1, 2022 | £399
Part of the Materials Library sub-series
Japanese tradition has it that if you fold 1000 origami cranes you will be granted a wish of your choice. I have folded 1000 cranes and the practice of doing so becomes meditative, automatic and under your skin, in the way I would like painting to become for you too.
For this class you'll also need a single sheet of plain white A4 piece of paper (or roughly equivalent size), or plain white square paper of a similar size. Photocopier paper will do. We will take into account the translucency of the paper and material qualities of paper while painting in oils and notice how light falls on it and filters through it. We will be folding our own paper crane together in class also as a painting reference to gently introduce you to painting from life, and translating a 3D object into 2D. I have chosen origami as it has clearly defined planes and this makes it a relatively simple transition from 3D into the 2D painted surface.
I have chosen every singular object or picture carefully as each will help transmit a certain aspect of the principles of oil painting and picture making. These images are starting points only; we will entirely create our own artworks.

Crystal Growth
Part of the Cabinet of Curiosities oil miniature series
Started on Wed Jul 6, 2022 | £399
Part of the Materials Library sub-series
Crystals are not plants but they grow. Isn't that fascinating? If you time-lapse a video you can even see this happening before your eyes. They are reminiscent of icicles but can be elements (in the Periodic table sense) themselves. We will study the transparency and translucency of the hard and geometric facets of crystals, related but different to glass. We can take the opportunity to glaze them in wondrous and indescribable colours (image is for initial reference).
For this class, optionally, you could purchase a Grow Your Own Crystal Kit. I recommend National Geographic kits. These are widely available online and I hope internationally too. This is a way of observing crystalline structure first hand and is a very enjoyable way of understanding crystals by witnessing their growth in front of you. We are growing crystals as part of my homeschool with my children; crystals for us are the element of Earth, or rocks.
I have chosen every singular object or picture carefully as each will help transmit a certain aspect of the principles of oil painting and picture making. These images are starting points only; we will entirely create our own artworks.

Night Lotus
Part of the Cabinet of Curiosities oil miniature series
Started on Wed Aug 3, 2022 | £399
Summer early evenings are a fortuitous time to paint the unbelievably beautiful night lotus - in oils.
The night drapes a gorgeous pale blue colour over its pristine white petals, as if it has been painted by the nighttime itself. A chance to paint quiet lights and gentle shades in oils as well as begin our early studies in luminescence, and a relatively simple first flower.
If you have access to real lotuses in a pond near you - then lucky you! I wish I had nearby lotuses. Along with the tulip, they are becoming one of my favourite flowers. A meditative end to summer.
I have chosen every singular object or picture carefully as each will help transmit a certain aspect of the principles of oil painting and picture making. These images are starting points only; we will entirely create our own artworks.

Bonsai
Part of the Cabinet of Curiosities oil miniature series
Started on Wed Sep 7, 2022 | £399
Something old - a bonsai. The best films - Blade Runner, Dune - have bonsai in refined or futuristic interiors - they're still there, slowly existing, in the future. A tree in miniature is a close cousin to a floating island, a world in miniature. There is something about the quiet drama of a little tree you can hold in your hand.
The best thing would be to actually grow a bonsai yourself. This would take years. The next best thing is to paint one.
